CHAPTER 57 — रम्य-पथः | Scenic Route

आचार्या यिन् वदति, “महोदय, अद्य छात्रायाः मुखात् मनोहरं कथाम् अश्रौषम्।”

आचार्यो याङ् प्रत्युत्तरं ददाति, “किम् तत् स्वतन्त्रतया श्रोतुम् शक्नोमि, अथवा तत्-कथने याचना करणीया?”

आचार्या यिन् आरभते, “मम छात्रा स्व-दैनिक-अरण्य-गमनस्य वृत्तान्तम् अकथयत् कार्यालयं प्रति—केवल-जीविकार्थम् आक्रान्त-पथम्। एकदा सा तत्रैव मार्गे अन्यं यात्रिणम् अपश्यत्, किन्तु तस्य आचरणम् अत्यन्तं भिन्नम् आसीत्। सः प्रायः विरमति स्म, पार्श्व-पथान् अन्वेषयति स्म, कदाचित् झाटिकाभ्यो बाहिरागच्छति स्म, केश-विकीर्ण-वस्त्र-छिन्न-तनुः, तथापि निरुत्साहो न।”

ācāryā yin vadati, “mahodaya, adya chātrāyāḥ mukhāt manoharam kathām aśrauṣam।”

ācāryo yāṅ pratyuttaraṃ dadāti, “kim tat svatantratayā śrotum śaknomi, athavā tat-kathane yācanā karaṇīyā?”

ācāryā yin ārabhate, “mama chātrā sva-dainika-araṇya-gamanasya vṛttāntam akathayat kāryālayaṃ prati—kevala-jīvikārtham ākrānta-patham। ekadā sā tatraiva mārge anyaṃ yātriṇam apaśyat, kintu tasya ācaraṇam atyantaṃ bhinnam āsīt। saḥ prāyaḥ viramati sma, pārśva-pathān anveṣayati sma, kadācit jhāṭikābhyo bāhirāgacchati sma, keśa-vikīrṇa-vastra-chinna-tanuḥ, tathāpi nirutsāho na।”

Master Yin says, “Sir, I heard a delightful tale from a student today.” Master Yang replies, “Am I to hear it freely, or must I petition for its telling?” Master Yin begins, “My student recounted her daily journey through the jungle to work—a path trodden solely for livelihood. One day, she noticed a fellow traveler on the same route, but his manner was quite different. He would pause often, explore side paths, and occasionally emerge from thickets, disheveled, clothes ripped, yet undeterred.”

“कुतूहल-जनकम्,” आचार्यो याङ् शिरो नमयति, “कृपया आगच्छतु।”

“kutūhala-janakam,” ācāryo yāṅ śiro namayati, “kṛpayā āgacchatu।”

“Intriguing,” Master Yang nods, “Pray continue.”

आचार्या यिन् आगच्छति, “कौतूहल-प्रेरिता सा अन्ततः तम् अपृच्छत्, ‘महोदय, यदि पृच्छितुं शक्नोमि, किं त्वाम् एतत् पथं प्रतिदिनम् अतिक्रमणे प्रेरयति, तत्-अनेक-विचलनान् अन्वेषयन्तम्?’”

ācāryā yin āgacchati, “kautūhala-preritā sā antatae tam apṛcchat, ‘mahodaya, yadi pṛcchituṃ śaknomi, kiṃ tvām etat pathaṃ pratidinam atikramaṇe prerayati, tat-aneka-vicalanān anveṣayantam?’”

Master Yin proceeds, “Curiosity piqued, she finally inquired of him, ‘Sir, if I may ask, what compels you to traverse this path daily, investigating its many diversions?’”

आचार्यो याङ् अग्रे नमति, “तस्य उत्तरम् किम्?”

ācāryo yāṅ agre namati, “tasya uttaram kim?”

Master Yang leans forward, “And his response?”

नेत्र-चञ्चलतया आचार्या यिन् समापयति, “पदयात्री सरलम् उत्तरं ददौ, ‘अहमपि प्रतिदिनं कार्यं प्रति गच्छामि। किन्तु एतत् पथं तत्-अद्भुत-दृश्यावली-निमित्तम् वृणोमि।’”

netra-cañcalatayā ācāryā yin samāpayati, “padayātrī saralam uttaraṃ dadau, ‘ahamapi pratidinaṃ kāryaṃ prati gacchāmi। kintu etat pathaṃ tat-adbhuta-dṛśyāvalī-nimittam vṛṇomi।’”

With a twinkle in her eye, Master Yin concludes, “The hiker simply replied, ‘I, too, walk to work each day. But I choose this path for its magnificent scenery.’”

आचार्यो याङ् उपनेत्रे अपसारयन्, अधरेषु हासो विलसति। “वस्तुतः कथा कथनीया महोदया। सा दृष्टिकोणस्य महत्त्वम् बहु वदति।”

ācāryo yāṅ upanetre apasārayan, adhareṣu hāso vilasati। “vastutaḥ kathā kathanīyā mahodayā। sā dṛṣṭikoṇasya mahattvam bahu vadati।”

Master Yang removes his glasses, a smile playing on his lips. “Indeed, a tale worth sharing, Madam. It speaks volumes of perspective.”

एतत् कथायाः नैतिक-शिक्षा महामार्गिणो वृत्तिः। प्रत्येकं दृश्यं सम्भावित-विस्मय-श्रद्धा-अर्थ-हर्ष-पूर्णम्—यद्यपि वयम् अन्येषाम् इव कार्यं प्रति गच्छामः॥

etat kathāyāḥ naitika-śikṣā mahāmārgiṇo vṛttiḥ। pratyekaṃ dṛśyaṃ sambhāvita-vismaya-śraddhā-artha-harṣa-pūrṇam—yadyapi vayam anyeṣām iva kāryaṃ prati gacchāmaḥ॥

The moral of the story is the attitude of the Wayist. Every scene is potentially filled with wonder and awe, meaning and joy—even if we are on our way to work like everybody else.

महामार्गी सामान्ये सौन्दर्य-उद्देश्यं च लभते, दैनिक-व्यवहारान् आध्यात्मिक-अभ्यासे रूपान्तरयन्॥१॥

mahāmārgī sāmānye saundaryam-uddeśyaṃ ca labhate, dainika-vyavahārān ādhyātmika-abhyāse rūpāntarayan॥1॥

The Wayist finds beauty and purpose in the mundane, transforming daily routines into spiritual practice.

चेतना-संवर्धनेन महामार्गी प्रत्येक-यात्राम् विकास-अन्तर्दृष्टि-अवसरे परिणमयति॥२॥

cetanā-saṃvardhanaena mahāmārgī pratyeka-yātrām vikāsa-antardṛṣṭi-avasare pariṇamayati॥2॥

By cultivating mindfulness, the Wayist turns every journey into an opportunity for growth and insight.

एषा वृत्तिः महामार्गिणम् केन्द्रीकृतम् आनन्दितं च स्थापयति, बाह्य-परिस्थिति-निरपेक्षम्॥३॥

eṣā vṛttiḥ mahāmārgiṇam kendrīkṛtam ānandita c sthāpayati, bāhya-paristhiti-nirapekṣam॥3॥

This attitude allows the Wayist to remain centered and joyful, regardless of external circumstances.

रम्य-पथो गन्तव्ये न, किन्तु यात्रायाः प्रत्येक-पदे दत्त-अवधान-गुणवत्तायाम्॥४॥

ramya-patho gantavye na, kintu yātrāyāḥ pratyeka-pade datta-avadhāna-guṇavattāyām॥4॥

The scenic route is not about the destination, but the quality of attention given to each step of the journey.

साधारणे असाधारणं दृष्ट्वा महामार्गी सर्वत्र महामार्गस्य उपस्थितिम् अनुभवति॥५॥

sādhāraṇe asādhāraṇaṃ dṛṣṭvā mahāmārgī sarvatra mahāmārgasya upasthitim anubhavati॥5॥

In seeing the extraordinary in the ordinary, the Wayist realizes the presence of theWAY in all things.
