CHAPTER 64 — महामार्ग-अवगतिः | Understanding The Way
महामार्ग-अवगतिः वास्तविकतायाः मौलिक-स्वभावस्य, सर्व-अस्तित्वम् शासन्ती अन्तर्निहित-सिद्धान्तस्य, मानव-जीवनस्य उद्देश्यस्य च ग्रहणम्॥१॥
mahāmārga-avagatiḥ vāstavikatatāyāḥ maulika-svabhāvasya, sarva-astitvam śāsantī antarnihita-siddhāntasya, mānava-jīvanasya uddeśyasya ca grahaṇam॥1॥
To understand The Way is to grasp the fundamental nature of reality, the underlying principle that governs all existence, and the purpose of human life.
तत् केवल-बौद्धिक-अवगतिर् न, अपितु जीवित-अनुभवः, ब्रह्माण्डीय-व्यवस्थायाम् प्रत्यक्ष-अन्तर्दृष्टिः॥२॥
tat kevala-bauddika-avasgatir na, apitu jīvita-anubhavaḥ, brahmāṇḍīya-vyavasthāyām pratyakṣa-antardṛṣṭiḥ॥2॥
It is not mere intellectual comprehension, but a lived experience, a direct insight into the cosmic order.
महामार्गो वाक्यैः वर्णयितुम् न शक्यते, तथापि सर्व-घटनेषु व्यक्तम् भवति, दृश्यादृश्येषु॥३॥
mahāmārgo vākyaiḥ varṇayitum na śakyate, tathāpi sarva-ghaṭaneṣu vyaktam bhavati, dṛśyādṛśyeṣu॥3॥
The Way cannot be described in words, yet it manifests in all phenomena, both seen and unseen.
तत् विपरीत-तत्त्वानाम् सन्तुलनम्, परिवर्तन-स्थिरत्वयोः सामरस्यम्, अस्ति-भावस्य भवन-स्य च नृत्यम्॥४॥
tat viparīta-tattvānām santulanam, parivartana-sthiratvayoḥ sāmarasyam, asti-bhāvasya bhavana-sya ca nṛtyam॥4॥
It is the balance of opposites, the harmony of change and constancy, the dance of being and becoming.
प्राज्ञो महामार्गी स्व-जीवनम् महामार्ग-प्रवाह-संरेखणे चेष्टते, तत्-धाराभिः सह प्रवहन्, तत्-विरुद्धम् संघर्षं न कुर्वन्॥५॥
prājño mahāmārgī sva-jīvanam mahāmārga-pravāha-saṃrekhaṇe ceṣṭate, tat-dhārābhiḥ saha pravan, tat-viruddham saṅgharṣaṃ na kurvan॥5॥
The wise Wayist seeks to align their life with the flow of The Way, flowing with its currents rather than struggling against them.
महामार्ग-अवगतिम् प्रकृति-निरीक्षणं समावेशयति, प्राकृतिक-जगति तत्-सिद्धान्तानि स्पष्टम् प्रदर्शितानि। तत् पशु-जन-निरीक्षणम् अपि समावेशयति, सर्वेभ्यः शिक्षमाणम्॥६॥
mahāmārga-avagatim prakṛti-nirīkṣaṇaṃ samāveśayati, prākṛtika-jagati tat-siddhāntāni spaṣṭam pradarśitāni। tat paśu-jana-nirīkṣaṇam api samāveśayati, sarvebhyaḥ śikṣamāṇam॥6॥
Understanding The Way involves observing nature, for in the natural world, its principles are clearly displayed. It involves observing animals and people, learning from all.
तत् अन्तर्-स्थैर्य-संवर्धनम् अपेक्षते, मौने एव वयम् ब्रह्माण्डीय-प्राज्ञायाः सूक्ष्म-कुजनानि श्रोतुम् शक्नुमः॥७॥
tat antar-sthairya-saṃvardhananam apekṣate, maune eva vayam brahmāṇḍīya-prājñāyāḥ sūkṣma-kujanāni śrotum śaknumaḥ॥7॥
It requires cultivating inner stillness, for only in silence can we hear the subtle whispers of cosmic wisdom.
महामार्गः अन्तर्व्यापी बहिर्व्यापी च, प्रत्येकस्मिन् अणुके उपस्थितः तथापि सर्व-अभिव्यक्तेः परे॥८॥
mahāmārgaḥ antarvyāpī bahirvyāpī ca, pratyekasmin aṇuke upasthitaḥ tathāpi sarva-abhivyakteḥ pare॥8॥
The Way is both immanent and transcendent, present in every atom yet beyond all manifestation.
महामार्ग-अवगतिः स्व-अवगतिः, वयम् एतस्मात् ब्रह्माण्डीय-सिद्धान्तात् पृथक् न॥९॥
mahāmārga-avagatiḥ sva-avagatiḥ, vayam etasmāt brahmāṇḍīya-siddhāntāt pṛthak na॥9॥
To understand The Way is to understand ourselves, for we are not separate from this cosmic principle.
यथा अस्माकम् अवगतिः गभीरी-भवति, वयम् बौद्धिक-ज्ञानात् मूर्त-प्राज्ञाम् गच्छामः, अस्माकम् अस्ति-भावम् एव महामार्गस्य अभिव्यक्तिः॥१०॥
yathā asmākam avagatiḥ gabhīrī-bhavati, vayam bauddika-jñānāt mūrta-prājñām gacchāmaḥ, asmākam asti-bhāvam eva mahāmārgasya abhivyaktiḥ॥10॥
As we deepen our understanding, we move from intellectual knowledge to embodied wisdom, our very being an expression of The Way.
तथापि सत्य-अवगतिः निरन्तर-विकासशील, प्रत्येकः अन्तर्दृष्टिः रहस्य-विस्मयस्य नूतन-गभीरतान् प्रकाशयन्॥११॥
tathāpi satya-avagatiḥ nirantara-vikāsaśīla, pratyekaḥ antardṛṣṭiḥ rahasya-vismayasya nūtana-gabhīratān prakāśayan॥11॥
Yet true understanding is ever-evolving, each insight revealing new depths of mystery and wonder.
महामार्गी एतस्मिन् आजीवन-अन्वेषणे स्वम् अर्पयतु, महामार्ग-अवगतिम् अस्माकम् परम-उद्देश्य-पूर्तिः॥१२॥
mahāmārgī etasmin ājīvana-anveṣaṇe svam arpayatu, mahāmārga-avagatim asmākam parama-uddeśya-pūrtiḥ॥12॥
Let the Wayist dedicate themselves to this lifelong exploration, for in understanding The Way, we fulfill our highest purpose.
आचार्यो याङ् उवाच, “वयं जनान् चेतनया महामार्गम् ज्ञातुम् शिक्षयितुम् शक्नुमः। प्रकृति-तत्-तत्त्वानाम्, वायु-श्वेत-स्थान-तम-स्थानानाम्, प्रकृति-नियमानाम् च सावधान-निरीक्षण-सूक्ष्म-परीक्षणम्। निश्चयेन तत् तेभ्यः प्राथमिक-अवगतिम् लब्धुम् उपकरिष्यति।”
आचार्या यिन् उवाच, “यदा वयम् यात्रायाम् गच्छामः, अहं गन्तव्यार्थम् संग्रह-कार्यम् करोमि यात्राम् च आनन्दयामि, किन्तु त्वं विमान-रेल-गाड़ीं च अध्ययनं करोषि। किम् तत् यात्रा-गन्तव्ययोः विषयो न, वाहनस्य अपेक्षया?”
आचार्यो याङ् उवाच, “महोदया, मया ते वक्तव्यम्। कदाचित् अहम् कल्पयामि यत् अस्माकम् सन्तानाः कीदृशाः स्युः। त्वं जानासि…यदि वयम् विवाहिताः स्याम इत्यादि।”
ācāryo yāṅ uvāca, “vayaṃ janān cetanayā mahāmārgam jñātum śikṣayitum śaknumaḥ। prakṛti-tat-tattvānām, vāyu-śveta-sthāna-tama-sthānānām, prakṛti-niyamānām ca sāvadhāna-nirīkṣaṇa-sūkṣma-parīkṣaṇam। niścayena tat tebhyaḥ prāthamika-avagatim labdhum upakriṣyati।”
ācāryā yin uvāca, “yadā vayam yātrāyām gacchāmaḥ, ahaṃ gantavyārtham saṃgraha-kāryam karomi yātrām ca ānandayāmi, kintu tvaṃ vimāna-rela-gāḍīṃ ca adhyayanaṃ karoṣi। kim tat yātrā-gantavyayoḥ viṣayo na, vāhanasya apekṣayā?”
ācāryo yāṅ uvāca, “mahodayā, mayā te vaktavyam। kadācit aham kalpayāmi yat asmākam santānāḥ kīdṛśāḥ syuḥ। tvaṃ jānāsi…yadi vayam vivāhitāḥ syāma ityādi।”
Master Yang said, “We can teach people to know theWAY by mindfulness. Careful observation and meticulous inspection of the flow of nature and her elements, of air, white space, and dark space, and of nature’s laws. Surely that will help them to gain an elementary understanding.” Master Yin said, “When we are going on a journey, I pack for the destination and enjoy the trip, but you study the plane and the train. Is it not a matter of the journey and the destination, rather than the vehicle?” Master Yang said, “Madam, I must tell you. Sometimes I imagine what our children would look like. You know…had we been married and all that.”
